The experience

The journey starts at Sylhet Railway Station, where your host meets you for a two-hour drive through tea estates, rural villages and farmland to Juri. Charubala Homestay sits in a peaceful village surrounded by tea gardens and forested hills. On arrival, the 11-member family welcomes you in traditional style, and you settle into a simple private room in their family home. After lunch with the family, you take a neighbourhood walk and a pedal van ride through village lanes, passing homes, ponds and fields. The evening ends at the local market and dinner with the family around their table.

Day two moves through the communities that shape the region. You visit a nearby tea garden and meet families who work there, learning how tea moves from plucking to processing to the cup. A local host takes you through a Manipuri village where residents welcome you traditionally, and you share a lunch cooked in the community. Afterwards, you walk through a Khasi hill village and learn about their matrilineal family system, where lineage passes through the mother's line, and their connection to forest life and betel-leaf cultivation. You return to the homestay for tea and a family dinner.

Day three is a full day of landscape and water. After breakfast, you travel to Madhabkunda Eco Park and walk beneath green trees toward one of Bangladesh's best-known waterfalls. A community guide then leads you into the Patharia Hills on a trail through tea gardens, forest paths and open hill scenery. The route and pace adjust to weather and your comfort. You stop for a simple lunch prepared by local community members. When local rules, weather and water conditions permit, you may enter the water in a designated safe area under the guide's supervision. In the afternoon, you continue to Hakaluki Haor, one of Bangladesh's largest freshwater wetlands. When water levels allow, you put on a life jacket and board a traditional wooden boat, gliding across the wetland past floating plants and fishing areas. You meet local fishermen and learn how surrounding communities depend on the haor for their livelihoods. You return to the homestay for a family dinner and your third night.

On the fourth morning, you share one last home-cooked breakfast and tea with the family, exchange photographs and stories, and receive a warm farewell. The return journey to Sylhet City takes roughly two hours, retracing the countryside route through tea estates and rural villages. Drop-off can be arranged at Sylhet Railway Station, Kulaura Junction, or Sreemangal Railway Station, depending on your onward plans.

Is this one for you?The pace is steady but unhurried (village walks, a forest hike with pauses for photographs and rest, and a boat crossing that depends on water conditions), so it suits travelers comfortable with a mix of walking and sitting, and flexible about what each day brings. The homestay itself means you eat, sleep and spend downtime with the family rather than retreating to a hotel, which is what makes the experience personal rather than observational.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (17 to 21 years); Child (7 to 16 years); Infant (under 7).

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is a Khasi village and how is it different from other communities in the area?

Khasi villages in the Sylhet region are home to an Indigenous community with a matrilineal family system, where lineage and inheritance traditionally pass through the mother's line rather than the father's. During your visit, you spend time with residents learning about their language, customs, forest-connected way of life and betel-leaf cultivation.

Can I actually swim or wade in Madhabkunda Waterfall?

When local rules, weather and water conditions permit, you may enter the water only in a designated safe area under your guide's supervision. The guide assesses conditions on the day and decides whether entry is safe.

What happens if water levels are too low to cross Hakaluki Haor by boat?

Hakaluki Haor's character changes with the seasons. Higher water creates wide, open views, while lower water levels in winter bring migratory birds to quieter shallows. If water levels do not permit a wooden boat crossing, the day's activities adjust according to what the wetland offers at that time.

Do I stay in a hotel or in the family's home?

You stay in a simple private room in Charubala Homestay, the family's rural home, with a shared bathroom and basic comforts. All meals are shared with the 11-member Hindu family around their table.

Is the guide English-speaking, and do I need to arrange my own transport to Sylhet?

Yes, a live English-speaking guide is included throughout the four days. Private transportation is included from Sylhet Railway Station to Juri and back to your chosen drop-off point in Sylhet City, Kulaura Junction, or Sreemangal Railway Station.

What is cha-patar bhorta, and will I eat it during the tour?

Cha-patar bhorta is a local Bangladeshi dish made from tea leaves. You taste it during your visit to a tea garden community on day two, as part of learning about tea's journey from plucking to the people who work with it.
