The experience
The journey starts before dawn at Dhaka's central station with a 5-hour train ride on the Parabat Express, stopping at four or five stations along the way. You'll arrive in Sreemangal around 11:30 am, where your guide meets you for a tuktuk transfer to your hotel. After freshening up, the afternoon takes you through Noor Jahan Tea Estate (walking among the rolling gardens where you'll watch the hand-picking process and visit worker villages), then to Padmachara, a tea labor settlement where daily life unfolds along narrow paths between houses and fields. The day ends at Madhabpur Lake, where a hilltop viewpoint frames the sunset over the water and surrounding forest.
Day two is the hiking day. At 9 am your guide and tuktuk driver collect you for a 2.5-hour trek into Lawachara National Park, a rainforest where the rare hillock gibbons live. If luck holds, you'll hear or see them in the canopy. The trail passes through dense greenery and stops at a Khasia tribal family's home for local tea and conversation. The afternoon moves to Hail Haor, one of Bangladesh's largest wetlands, where shallow waters attract migratory birds and fishing communities work the seasonal rhythms. Before returning to the hotel, you visit the seven-layer tea stall (the birthplace of this famous local drink), and taste it before dinner.
The final morning includes a walk through Sreemangal's market, where vendors sell fresh vegetables and fruit, then a 1-hour tuktuk drive to Kalachara Community School in a remote village. Here you'll meet Garo children and see how the school serves tea estate workers' families. After lunch in town, you're transferred to the station for the afternoon train back to Dhaka: a 5.5-hour return journey arriving around 7 or 8 pm, with a final tuktuk ride to your hotel or airport.
