The experience

You meet your host at Sylhet Railway Station and travel two hours by local van through tea estates, paddy fields and rural villages toward Juri, watching Durga Puja decorations and pandals appear along the way. At Charubala Homestay you receive a traditional welcome, rest in a private room, eat a vegetarian Bengali lunch prepared by the family, walk through the neighbourhood to meet residents, then walk five minutes to the village temple for evening prayers. The host explains the rituals and their meaning while you observe the decorations, music and community gathering. Depending on the temple schedule, you may join Sylheti damail, a traditional group dance with singing and rhythmic clapping, before sharing a simple vegetarian meal with the community.

Day two is Vijaya Dashami, the final day of Durga Puja. You leave around 8:00 AM in a traditional local van and stop at several village Puja mandaps, where the host introduces you to local people and explains how decorations, rituals and farewell preparations differ between communities. Around midday you visit a tea-garden settlement, walk through the community, observe their Puja mandap and share a traditional vegetarian lunch with residents. You then visit a Manipuri village, home to an Indigenous Hindu community with its own language and cultural traditions distinct from the Bengali families you met earlier. Back at the main temple near the homestay before evening, you observe the final prayers and farewell rituals. Women guests may participate in Sindoor Khela with guidance from local women, a tradition where vermilion is shared as a blessing. You follow the Bisorjon procession to the immersion site, receive Shanti Jol (blessed water) at the temple, exchange Bijoya greetings, share a vegetarian dinner with the community, and return to the homestay.

The final morning is quiet. You have a relaxed breakfast, walk through the neighbourhood to greet familiar faces, sit with the family and share your thoughts. The farewell is personal and simple. You then return to Sylhet City by van, retracing the countryside route through tea estates and villages: the same landscapes that welcomed you three days earlier. Drop-off is arranged at Sylhet Railway Station, Kulaura Junction or Sreemangal Railway Station based on your onward travel plans.

Is this one for you?Your host speaks English and explains rituals, customs and village life as you move through each day, so you follow the celebrations and their meaning without prior knowledge of Durga Puja or Bengali culture. This suits travelers arriving in Sylhet with a free three-day window during the festival and wanting to experience it from inside a family home rather than as an outsider at a public event.
