The experience
The tour starts at the Bu Maher Fort Visitor's Center, where a three-dimensional display walks you through the Pearling Path's history from its earliest days to the grand pearl merchants who dominated the trade. From there you move into the restored houses themselves: Al Ghus House, built in the early 1900s by a boat captain or master boatbuilder and inhabited by pearl divers; Badr Ghulum Suleiman's residence, which served as Muharraq's first health clinic when modern medicine didn't exist; and Dar Almuharraq, a cultural center for traditional folk music housed in a three-story building with a steel mesh cooling system that opens directly to the street.
The walk continues through Al Jalahma House, built at the gateway to Al Halah Island and notable for revealing the female perspective on the pearling economy through its design for multiple wives and household members; Al Alawi House, which contains one of Muharraq's only two remaining functioning wind towers; and Fakhro House, the luxury residence of a timber and boat merchant that expanded into the sea as the family's needs grew. Your guide explains how each building reflects the different roles in the pearling trade (from divers and haulers to pearl traders and grand merchants), and the wealth that flowed through Muharraq during its golden era.
The tour ends with a traditional Bahraini breakfast served in a heritage house restaurant, where you sit in the spaces these families once lived. Snacks are provided during the walk, and your admission to Bahrain National Museum is included with the tour price. The route is walkable for all fitness levels, and public transportation options are available nearby if you need them.
