The experience
The walk starts at Bab Al Bahrain, the 1949 gatehouse that marks the souq's main entrance, and moves through the original post office: now a postal museum with vintage stamps and a terrace overlooking the gate. From there the route passes through Little India, a 5,000-square-meter neighborhood of three streets built historically with Indian wood, and stops at Shrinathji Temple, a Hindu temple established in 1817. The guide explains the cultural layers woven through these blocks and the role each played in Bahrain's history as a trading hub.
Two cultural houses anchor the tour. Khalaf House exemplifies the city's ties to pearling merchants. The building was donated by the Khalaf family to honor that history and is now affiliated with the Shaikh Ebrahim Centre for Culture and Research. Manamat Al Gossaibi, housed in a traditional Bahraini home in the Fareej Al Fadel neighborhood, celebrates the poet and public figure Gazi Abdul Rahman Al Gosaibi with displays and artistic expressions. Both offer a window into how Manama's merchant families shaped the nation.
The tour breaks for food and rest at a restaurant serving samboosa, a Bahraini pastry with potatoes, that has operated for over a century, and then at a traditional coffee shop where you drink Arabic coffee and tea before the walk concludes. Snacks and beverages are included, and the guide points out other heritage sites along the way, including the House of Ten Commandments, the only operational synagogue in the Gulf region, and the source of Halwa Showaiter, a traditional sweet confection the Showaiter family has made for 150 years.
