The experience

You're choosing between a guided ride and going solo. The guided "Ride Paradise, Live Adventure" tour puts you on an ATV with a driver who knows where the real Nassau is, not the resort version. You'll stop at Queen's Staircase, the 66 limestone steps hand-carved in the late 1700s that lead up to Fort Fincastle with views over the harbor and the whole island spread below. The caves come next, natural limestone passages where the Lucayan Indians once lived, cool and shadowed, with hanging roots and bats if you're quiet enough to spot them. Then beaches: Junkanoo, Cable, Cabbage on Paradise Island, Saunders. The tour hits several so you see the range of what Nassau's coastline actually looks like.

If you'd rather ride your own machine, you pick the self-guided option (ATV, buggy or scooter), and the route is yours. You still get the same stops and the same three to four hours, but you're the one controlling speed and timing. This works if you've ridden before and want the freedom, or if you're traveling with someone who needs to move at their own rhythm. Soft drinks are included either way.

The tour also swings through the parts of Nassau that matter to people who actually live there: Fish Fry at Arawak Cay, where locals eat cracked conch and conch salad at open-air stalls with island music playing; Graycliff, an 18th-century mansion with gardens, a wine cellar, and hands-on experiences with chocolate and cigars; and the straw market downtown. Pickup is built in on the guided tours, so you don't arrange transport to the start.

What is Queen's Staircase and why is it on this tour?

Queen's Staircase is a limestone staircase of 66 steps (now 65 due to road construction) hand-carved by enslaved people in the late 1700s. It's surrounded by tall limestone walls and lush greenery, and at the top you reach Fort Fincastle, which overlooks Nassau harbor and the whole island. It's the most historic landmark on the tour.

Can I ride an ATV if I've never done it before?

Yes. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and you can choose the guided option if you want someone leading the way, or self-guided if you prefer to set your own pace. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available.
