The experience

You start on an ATV or side-by-side buggy depending on which option you book, then ride out to Queen's Staircase: a carved limestone monument tied to the island's emancipation history. Your guide walks you through the site and up the 66 steps so you can photograph the view and learn how the island defended itself from French invasion. From there the route takes you to a working rum cake factory where you'll taste two flavors of their daily-baked cakes and get a free shot with any purchase, then through a local market for souvenirs before heading to Cable Beach for a break with a view of the water. If you want, water sports are available there.

The tour is built around stops rather than speed. At each one you hop off to walk around, take photos and hear the history: a resort visit, caves where you can grab conch salad and other Bahamian food, and a final photo stop at a well-known resort. Your guide handles the route and the talking. You control the pace and decide how long to linger at each spot. Samples of rum cake, wine, chocolate and moonshine come with the ride, and the fuel surcharge is included in the price.
