The experience
Nine days gives you time to move slowly through two countries without rushing between stops. The tour starts with Baku's Old City (the Maiden Tower, Shirvanshahs' Palace, the Heydar Aliyev Center and the National Carpet Museum), then moves outward to the Absheron Peninsula, where you'll see the Ateshgah Fire Temple and Yanar Dag, a hillside where natural gas burns continuously. A side trip to Gobustan, 60 kilometers from the city, shows rock engravings dating back 5,000 to 40,000 years. The museum there explains the earliest inhabitants of the region. The mud volcanoes near Qobustan require a switch to a Soviet-era Lada for the rough road: a deliberate detour into terrain a standard car cannot reach.
Days four and five take you north through Shamakhi, where the Juma Mosque stands as the first mosque built in the Caucasus, and into the Caucasus Mountains themselves. You'll stop at Lahic, an ancient village known for copper work, see the Seven Beauty Waterfall, and reach Sheki, where the Palace of Shaki Khans (built in 1797) sits in the town center. From Sheki, a day trip to Qakh includes the Sumuq Fortress and a short hike to Mamirli Waterfall. The pace here is deliberate: you have time to walk the streets, visit the Upper Caravanserai, and see the Albanian Church at Kish village, built in the 1st century A.D.
The final stretch crosses into Georgia. You'll pass through Zaqatala, visiting its fortress and a Soviet-era military barracks, before arriving in Sighnaghi, a walled city on a hilltop overlooking the Alazani Valley. A full day there includes a wine-tasting tour. The route ends in Tbilisi with a private city tour and time to visit the Sulphur Baths. Your guide speaks English throughout, and the private car means no shared stops or group schedules: only the itinerary you're traveling.

Is this one for you?The nine-day length means you travel at a walking pace through each region instead of racing between highlights, but it also requires you to commit the full week plus travel days. Book this if you want depth over speed, and if you can arrange flights that align with a nine-day window rather than a shorter trip.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Yanar Dag and why does it matter on this tour?
Yanar Dag is a natural gas fire that burns continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula near Baku, with flames shooting up to three meters into the air. It sits at the heart of Azerbaijan's nickname as "the Land of Fire" and is one of the most photographed natural phenomena in the country.
How much walking is involved in the Gobustan and mud volcano section?
Gobustan National Museum is a walk-through site with rock engravings visible along a marked path. The mud volcanoes require a transfer to a Lada vehicle because the road is too rough for a standard car, but the actual volcano viewing involves minimal hiking. It is more of a short walk and photo stop than a trek.
What happens in Sighnaghi during the full day there?
Sighnaghi is a walled city perched on a hilltop, and the day includes a city walking tour and a wine-tasting tour. The town is known for its views over the Alazani Valley and its wine production. You'll have time to explore the streets and sample local wines.
Does the tour include meals?
Meals are not listed in the inclusions. The itinerary notes that a restaurant is available at Great Lake (where you have one hour to spend), and wine tastings are included in Sighnaghi, but breakfast, lunch and dinner are your own arrangement unless you request customization when booking.
What is the Ateshgah Fire Temple?
Ateshgah is a historic fire temple where natural flames burn continuously from seven holes in the ground. According to historical records, local people worshiped at the site before the Indian Temple of Fire was built in Surakhani at the end of the 17th century, making it one of Azerbaijan's most remarkable religious sites.
Can the itinerary be changed?
Yes. The operator welcomes customization requests to suit your interests and pace, so you can adjust stops, timing or activities when you book or discuss preferences with your guide.
