The experience

The route starts with a drive to Dürnstein in the Wachau Valley, where you walk through the town's narrow streets and take in its position on the Danube. From there the tour heads toward Salzburg, passing through the Dachstein mountains and glaciers on the way. In Salzburg itself, a guide leads you through the Old Town sights and lesser-known corners, then leaves you free time to wander the same streets featured in The Sound of Music or pick up a Mozart Kugel chocolate ball from a local shop.

The final stop is Hallstatt, a town on the shore of a mountain lake in the Salzkammergut region. You get free time here to walk the narrow lanes, grab lunch and photograph the lake and peaks from different angles. The remaining hours of the 12- to 13-hour day are taken up by the drives between towns and the return journey to your Vienna or Bratislava hotel.
