The experience

You meet your guide in front of the Dombuchhandlung bookstore on Kapitelplatz and skip the cash desk line with all-inclusive fortress tickets already in hand. The funicular carries you up 506 meters to the castle perched above the city, and from there the guide walks you through the Princes' chambers (the most expensive section of the complex) along with the Golden Hall, Golden Chamber, Bedchamber, chapel, armory and the Fortress Museum. The Marionette Museum sits inside too. Over a thousand years of Salzburg's history unfolds through the generations of prince-bishops who built and lived in these rooms, and the views down to the city and surrounding mountains frame the whole story.

After the guided portion, you're free to descend by funicular whenever you choose. If you've booked the 4-hour option, the guide leads you back down into the Old Town to walk Mozartplatz, Residenzplatz and the Franciscan Church, then visits Salzburg Cathedral: cathedral tickets are purchased on-site during opening hours, and the guide shares what they can depending on whether mass or special events are happening that day. The whole day stays private. No other travelers join your group.

Pickup from your accommodation is included if you're staying within 1.5 km of the meeting point. The guide speaks the language you choose at booking, and accessibility support is available. All areas of the fortress are wheelchair accessible, and strollers work for infants and small children. One note: from mid-January through mid-February, the funicular undergoes maintenance, so the fortress is reached on foot instead.
