Medieval streets and baroque fountains in Austria's fourth-largest city

A private walking tour through Salzburg's old town with a licensed guide in English or German, covering two hours and five major landmarks. You start at Mirabell Palace's baroque garden, pass Mozart's birthplace on Getreidegasse, and end at Kapitelplatz facing Hohensalzburg Fortress. The route crosses the Salzach River, moves through arcaded courtyards, and stops at the Cathedral: the largest baroque church north of the Alps.

The experience

Mirabell Palace's garden is where the walk begins, then you head to Mozart's residence before crossing the Salzach River into the old town. Medieval house passages open onto Getreidegasse, where traditional guild signs still hang above shop windows and Mozart was born. An arcaded courtyard leads past the Kollegienkirche, the first Austrian Baroque church, and the Grünmarkt. The route moves through the town's heart without backtracking: each stop flows into the next.

The Alter Markt sits where Mozart's favorite café still operates, surrounded by Mozart ball shops and luxury stores. From there you enter the princely town at Residenzplatz, where the old and new Residenz face each other across the largest baroque fountain outside Italy. A short detour brings you to Mozartplatz and then the Cathedral itself: monumental, oldest of its kind north of the Alps, and impossible to miss. The walk ends at Kapitelplatz with a view of Hohensalzburg Fortress 100 meters above the city and St. Peter's Abbey, the oldest monastery in the German-speaking world.

The guide is a licensed professional who speaks either English or German throughout. Salzburg's old town is compact enough to cover on foot in two hours, and all surfaces are wheelchair accessible if you need that option.
