The experience

The Secession Building stands as the manifesto of Vienna's Art Nouveau movement. Completed in 1898 by Joseph Maria Olbrich, it housed exhibitions for the Vienna Secession: a group of artists who rejected the established fine art institution to forge their own path. Inside, Gustav Klimt's Beethoven Frieze, painted for one of the original shows, still occupies the walls. Your guide walks you through the building's design logic and the radical philosophy behind it, then moves through Stadtpark and on to Karlsplatz, where Otto Wagner's Stadtbahn station buildings rise as another landmark of Jugendstil architecture.

Wagner designed the Karlsplatz station buildings as Vienna's transport adviser, and they've become textbook examples of how Art Nouveau principles shaped everyday infrastructure. The Otto Wagner Pavilion, built in 1898, now houses an exhibit on Wagner's life and modernist vision. From there, the tour reaches the Austrian Postal Savings Bank, another Wagner masterwork and a key work of Vienna Secession. The scholar guide unpacks the design elements and political philosophy woven through each building: how these architects and artists used form and ornament to signal a break from the past.

The tour ends near Naschmarkt, Vienna's largest culinary market, with around 120 stands and restaurants. A guide in English leads the full three hours. Pickup is included in the booking. Entrance to the Secession Building (€9.50 adults, €6 students and seniors) is separate, and the Otto Wagner Pavilion admission applies when the museum is open April through October.
