Step-by-step itinerary

Yarra Valley wine and food tasting

  • Cheese tasting at Yarra Valley Dairy
  • Explore vineyards and taste premium wines
  • Wine tasting on outdoor terrace
  • Lunch at Innocent Bystander or Soumah or Boat O'Craigo
  • Optional visit to distillery for gin tasting
  • Optional final tasting at Domaine Chandon

The experience

Yarra Valley Dairy opens the day with a cheese tasting built around artisanal local cheeses. From there, you move through the vineyards themselves: rolling hills lined with estates where you taste wines and learn how they're made. The guide knows the region and its 65 wineries. You pick which 2 or 3 to visit based on what appeals to you. Most tastings carry a small fee (typically $5 to $20), though many are refundable if you buy. Chandon, if you choose it, pours six sparkling wines and offers discounts on bottles.

Lunch is yours to decide. Innocent Bystander is a relaxed contemporary winery with a restaurant and wine bar. Soumah serves Northern Italian-inspired food and wines. Boat O'Craigo, a boutique winery, pairs its wines with cheese boards and pizzas. Each sits within the valley and lets you eat where you've been tasting. The cost of lunch runs roughly AUD$35 per person at the winery.

After lunch, the day splits. You can visit more wineries and taste Chandon's signature sparkling wines if time allows. Or you can pivot: Healesville Sanctuary for close encounters with native Australian wildlife; a gin distillery to watch the craft of distillation and sample gins; or the Chocolaterie for a sweet finish. The guide drives an air-conditioned vehicle and picks you up from your accommodation, so you don't need a car to move through the valley.

Top questions

Can I visit Healesville Sanctuary on this tour?

Yes. After lunch, you can choose Healesville Sanctuary as your final stop instead of returning to more wineries. The guide will take you there, and you'll have time to see native Australian wildlife before heading back.

How many wineries will I visit?

You choose 2 or 3 wineries before lunch from a list of 65 estates across Yarra Valley. Each offers its own wines and tasting experience, and most tastings carry a small fee that is often refundable with a purchase.

Where can I have lunch on the tour?

You pick your lunch spot from three estate restaurants: Innocent Bystander (contemporary winery with a cafe and wine bar), Soumah (Northern Italian-inspired cuisine), or Boat O'Craigo (boutique winery with cheese boards and pizzas). Lunch typically costs around AUD$35 per person.

What happens after lunch?

You decide. You can visit additional wineries, explore Healesville Sanctuary for wildlife, tour a gin distillery and taste gins, or finish at the Chocolaterie. The guide builds the afternoon around your preference.

Is the cheese tasting included in the tour?

Yes. The tour begins with a cheese tasting at Yarra Valley Dairy, where you sample artisanal cheeses made locally. Wine tastings at the estates typically cost $5 to $20 each and are often refundable with a purchase.

Do I need to arrange my own transport?

No. The tour includes pickup from your accommodation and transport in an air-conditioned vehicle throughout the day, so you don't need a car.
