The Experience

You leave Alice Springs in an air-conditioned mini-coach early in the morning, heading west into the MacDonnell Ranges. The guide provides commentary on the landscape and the traditional owners' connection to the land as you travel. Your first stop is Simpsons Gap (Rungutjirpa), where you walk near a waterhole and watch for black-footed rock-wallabies and other native wildlife — they're shy, so patience and a sharp eye help. From there you move to Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye), a narrow gorge 80 meters high and just 3 meters wide, where you walk through the red walls and learn about the ancient Aboriginal stories tied to the place.

Mid-morning you reach Ellery Creek Big Hole, one of Central Australia's largest swimming spots, ringed by towering red cliffs. This is where you cool off and rest before lunch. Morning tea and a picnic lunch are provided during the day. You also visit the Ochre Pit, a UNESCO-listed mineral rockface where colored clay ochre is still used in traditional ceremonies. The final major stop is Ormiston Gorge (Kwartatuma), where you take in the towering red walls and reflect on the day's route through the ranges before the drive back to Alice Springs, arriving around 6 p.m.

The tour covers roughly 3–4 km of guided walking across the day, split between the different gorges and sites. Because the itinerary adapts to seasonal changes and occasional park closures, the exact stops and swimming access may shift — the operator plans around safety and the best experience available on the day you travel. You'll need a moderate level of fitness to complete the walks, and you should pack adequate clothing for the season and temperature range.
