Step-by-step itinerary
Hot air balloon adventure at dawn
- Rise before dawn
- Watch balloon inflate
- Board hot air balloon
- Float over outback desert
- View MacDonnell Ranges and wildlife
- Enjoy refreshments at landing
The Experience
You start in the pre-dawn dark, when the outback sky still holds the brightest stars and the air is cool. The balloon inflates as the first glow appears in the east, and you board the basket as the sun's rays hit the ancient red land. The flight drifts you over the rugged landscape, and from the air you can spot native wildlife including red kangaroos moving across the terrain below. The MacDonnell Ranges stay visible for as long as the eye can see, their brooding shapes framing the immensity of the desert.
The whole experience runs about four hours from pickup to drop-off, though the actual flight time depends on which option you choose—30 or 60 minutes aloft. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange transport yourself. After landing, light refreshments including sparkling wine, fruit juice, individually packaged muffins and slices, and cheese and biscuits are served at the landing site. Packing up the balloon afterward is optional; if you want to help, you can, but it's entirely voluntary.
You'll need to be able to climb into the basket unaided using the foot holes—it's about 1.2 metres high—and stand for the duration of the flight. A live guide in English is with you throughout. Weather is the main variable: if unsuitable conditions prevent flying, you can rebook for another day or get a full refund, so booking for your first available day in the area gives you the best chance to fly if the weather shifts.
