The experience
You leave the resort in darkness and drive a short distance to the installation. The Field of Light spreads across a remote desert area within sight of Uluru itself: Bruce Munro's largest work to date, installed over more than 30 years after his first visit to the rock. Your guide walks you through the artist's vision and the scale of what you're about to see: more than 50,000 slender stems, each crowned with a radiant frosted glass sphere, planted across the desert floor.
The tour moves through the lit paths at your own pace. The spheres glow in ochre, deep violet, blue and gentle white, and you can wander as far as you want or find a quiet corner under the stars to sit with the installation in silence. The real draw is the dune-top viewing area, where you settle in as the sky begins to shift. Your guide points out Kata Tjuta behind you while you watch the light creep across the desert plain and hit Uluru. A warming tea, coffee or hot chocolate arrives while you wait for the sun.
The whole experience runs two hours start to finish, timed so you're back at the resort before breakfast and ready for any flights or other activities you have booked. The sandy paths around the spheres are uneven. Electronic wheelchairs can manage them, but standard wheelchairs can be dropped at the base of the dune, though the dune-top viewing area itself is not accessible that way.
