The Experience

"You'll see wombats on day two — they come out in the afternoon, and if you're quiet they won't bolt," our guide told us before we left Hobart. That promise stuck because it meant the 4-day wild Tasmania tour wasn't just about ticking boxes; it was built around what actually happens out there. The loop starts early from Hobart, heading into Mount Field National Park where Russell Falls drops between some of the tallest trees on the planet, and the rainforest is thick enough that you're searching for platypus in the water rather than just walking past a sign. By afternoon you're in Queenstown, an old mining town with weathered pubs and empty streets, then overnight at a lakeside lodge on Lake Rosebery where the quiet is the kind that makes you notice it.

Day two takes you through temperate rainforest into Cradle Mountain National Park, and that's where the wombats show up — solid, unhurried, real. The hike options are Dove Lake Circuit if you want the classic loop, or Marions Lookout if you're after altitude and views. After that you drive to a secluded bush cabin surrounded by wildlife, and there's a campfire and BBQ in the evening. It's not luxury, but it's not a hostel either; the accommodation throughout is private rooms or multi-share cabins with shared facilities, depending on what you book. Day three swings east toward the coast. The Bay of Fires has granite boulders covered in orange lichen and turquoise water shallow enough to wade, and the beaches stretch long enough that you can walk without seeing anyone. In the afternoon there's a wildlife sanctuary where you watch Tasmanian Devils feed — they're loud and aggressive and nothing like the cartoon — then you drive to Bicheno, a coastal town with a blowhole and a lookout where you might see whales. There's an option to join a guided Little Penguin tour at dusk if you want to stay out.

The final day is the shortest but the most famous. Freycinet National Park holds Wineglass Bay, and depending on the weather you either hike to the lookout and down to the beach, or take the Hazards Circuit for something longer, or climb Mount Amos. The water there is so clear it doesn't look real. After Cape Tourville you drive the Great Eastern Drive back to Hobart, arriving around 5:30pm. The whole tour is max 13 people, which means the van doesn't feel crowded and the guide can actually stop when someone spots something. Pickup and drop-off are from Hobart, so you don't arrange your own transport to the start or from the end.
