The experience

You arrive in Bundaberg with a free afternoon or morning, and this tour fills it with something most visitors never get: a direct account of the land from the people who have lived on it for more than 60,000 years. Taribelang Bunda guides drive you through the city and out to Hummock, a site of deep cultural significance, stopping along the way to explain how the three bridges over the Burnett River mark flood history, how the local language is woven into the CBD itself, and what the Bundaberg Rum Distillery and Brewed Drinks Barrel mean to the region. The route is built around learning, not just looking.

At Hummock, you sit at the park and taste native bush tucker during what the guides call Yarn Time: morning tea built around the raw flavours of traditional foods. You learn how plants were used for food, medicine and shelter, and you get to hold and sound a bullroarer, one of the traditional artefacts whose purpose and craft the guides explain step by step. The tour also takes you to Mon Repos, where you learn about initiations, tribal boundaries, and the history of South Sea Islander peoples alongside Taribelang Bunda stories. Throughout, the guides teach you words in their language and answer questions about how their ancestors lived on this country before colonisation and how that history intertwines with what came after.

The whole experience runs three hours in an air-conditioned vehicle, which means you can fit it into a half-day and still have time for lunch or other plans. A guide speaks English throughout, and children from age 5 can join. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller, and service animals are welcome.
