The Experience

I’ll admit, I thought I was ready for the Thunder Jet, but the first spin caught me off guard — water everywhere, my friend’s laugh echoing over the engine. Sydney Harbour looks different when you’re flying across it at full speed, salt in your nose and the Opera House flashing by on your left. Our driver (I think his name was Sam?) grinned like he’d done this a thousand times, which honestly made me trust him even more. There’s something about seeing those famous landmarks while you’re clutching your seat that makes them stick in your mind longer.

The music thumped through the speakers — some Aussie pop song I didn’t recognize — and we zipped past Luna Park’s giant face and under the Harbour Bridge. I tried to shout something to my cousin but just ended up with a mouthful of salty spray. The wind stung my cheeks in a good way. We got these bright yellow ponchos before boarding (they help, but don’t expect to stay dry), and there were lockers for our stuff so nothing got soaked. It felt like everyone was half-laughing, half-bracing for the next twist.

Honestly, I didn’t expect to learn anything, but Sam pointed out Rose Bay and Taronga Zoo as we whipped past — apparently there’s a secret beach somewhere near Watsons Bay? Not that I could see much through all the water streaks on my sunglasses. The whole thing only lasted about 30 minutes but it stretched out in my head; I still remember that weird mix of adrenaline and sea air when we slowed down at the end. If you want a regular sightseeing cruise… this isn’t it. But if you want to feel Sydney under your skin for a bit, well.
