The experience
I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to actually touch a koala. I thought it’d be more like. Look from a distance, maybe snap a blurry photo. But there we were at the Australian Reptile Park outside Sydney, and the ranger just grinned and said “Go on then.” The koala’s fur was softer than I imagined: kind of like an old wool jumper you keep for comfort. There was this eucalyptus smell everywhere, sharp and green. We wandered off after that to find kangaroos lounging in the sun. They barely blinked when we came close with handfuls of feed: one even nudged my elbow like he knew the drill better than me.
Our guide (I think her name was Mel?) had this way of making the weirdest animals feel familiar. She pointed out a dingo that looked half asleep and told us about Tasmanian devils fighting over food at night. The venom centre was… honestly, I didn’t linger too long near the snakes. But it’s wild to see how many creatures call Australia home that could probably take you out if they wanted. Lunch was simple but good: sandwiches by a waterfall tucked under red gums and banksias, with birds chattering overhead. I kept expecting someone to pop out with tea. It just felt so peaceful there.
After lunch we drove along these winding roads past lakes and tiny towns, Woy Woy stuck in my head because our driver said it twice for emphasis (“Woy Woy!”) and laughed at our attempts to say it right. We stopped by the water where giant pelicans strutted around waiting for scraps from fishermen. Their beaks are massive up close: like cartoon birds come to life. There was this salty tang in the air mixed with engine oil from the boats. Not unpleasant, just… real.
The last bit was my favorite: catching the train back into Sydney as dusk started to settle over Hawkesbury River. The windows fogged up a little from everyone’s breath and outside everything went gold for a minute as we crossed bridges over tangled waterways and forests. It felt almost too quiet after all the animal noises earlier. I still think about that view sometimes when city traffic gets loud again.
