The Experience

It started with Pete pulling up outside our Sydney hotel — helmet in hand, grinning like he already knew we’d love it. He called out, “Ready for the best seat in town?” I honestly wasn’t sure if he meant the view or the trike itself. My partner and I squeezed into our jackets (not as easy as it sounds) and Pete handed us helmets that still smelled faintly of sea salt and sunscreen. Locals on the sidewalk gave us a thumbs-up as we rumbled off toward Bondi Beach, which made me laugh — you don’t get that on a regular bus tour.

Bondi was busy but not chaotic, just that steady hum of beach life — kids with sticky ice cream hands, surfers shaking out their hair. We only stopped for a bit along the promenade, enough time for Pete to point out where locals actually swim (not always where you’d expect). The wind picked up as we cruised past Tamarama Beach. I tried to catch a whiff of the ocean but mostly got sunblock and someone’s fish ‘n’ chips drifting over from somewhere nearby. Pete joked about whale-spotting season and how last year someone thought they saw one but it turned out to be a guy on a paddleboard in a wetsuit. So yeah — not every story is epic but they stick with you.

The ride itself was half the fun — you feel every curve along Bronte and Coogee beaches, engine humming under your seat. There’s something weirdly calming about seeing all those little coves flash by while you’re tucked behind your partner, listening to Pete’s stories crackling through the intercom (sometimes cutting out when he laughed too hard). We didn’t stop everywhere; sometimes we just slowed down enough to watch people waving or see pelicans bobbing in the surf near Maroubra. If time allowed, Pete said we could grab a drink at La Perouse — I kind of wish we had more time there, honestly.

I still think about that feeling — sun on my face, salt in my hair, city behind us and nothing but blue ahead. It wasn’t perfect (my helmet hair was tragic), but it felt real in a way most tours don’t manage.
