A flat-deck catamaran designed for socialising means high heels stay on and there's room to move.

Sundowner is a two-hour sunset cruise from Able Point Marina in Airlie Beach aboard a fully covered catamaran built for socialising rather than sailing performance. The boat circumnavigates Pioneer Bay, passing Mandalay Point, Cannonvale Beach and Turtle Bay, with sparkling wine and antipasto platter included on arrival. A fully licensed bar sells wine, beer and spirits. Departures run 4:30–6:30pm April to July, 5:00–7:00pm August to October, and 5:15–7:15pm November to March, with arrival 15 minutes early.

The experience

What makes Sundowner different from a traditional yacht is the flat deck and the social layout. There are no trip hazards, ample room to move around, and a long central table with chairs on either side for relaxing or romanticising with a view out to the islands. If you want to settle in, the side ottomans face the water perfectly for watching the sunset. The boat has been operating for 16 years and is a local favourite, built specifically for the kind of evening where you connect with new people or spend quiet time with someone you came with.

Able Point Marina sits a short walk from Airlie Beach's main street, in the Northern Village where award-winning restaurants line the boardwalk. The cruise itself circumnavigates Pioneer Bay. Because the catamaran has very little draft, it gets close to points of interest including Mandalay Point and Cannonvale Beach, and passes through Turtle Bay where spotting is possible. You watch the lights of Airlie Beach come on as dusk turns to dark, with the Whitsunday islands as the backdrop. A glass of Australian sparkling arrives when you board, along with a shared platter of antipasto, crackers, dips and vege sticks. The fully licensed bar stocks six wines, four beers and all basic spirits if you want to order beyond what's included.
