The experience

SV Wings III leaves Coral Sea Marina in the late afternoon, heading out past the Port of Airlie Beach toward Pioneer Point with the Whitsunday Islands visible across the water. The skipper has over 30 years of experience, and the 60-foot vessel has large open deck areas where you can settle in as the light changes. Because the guest count stays at 29 maximum, there is room to move without feeling crowded: the whole point of a boat this size.

You're welcome to bring whatever drinks you prefer: champagne, beer, spirits, juice, or anything in between. Cups, wine glasses and champagne flutes are provided, along with ice. The crew serves a complimentary tropical cocktail when you arrive, then freshly prepared antipasto platters and dessert canapés as the sun dips below the horizon. Tea and coffee machines are available if you want them instead. A restroom is onboard, and you can connect your own Spotify playlists to the sound system.

The sail takes roughly two and a half hours. Kids from age 5 are welcome. The boat does move with the water, so you need to be able to step aboard and navigate the deck without assistance. There are two deck steps and steep stairways inside, and the restroom is narrow. The crew cannot physically help guests move around the vessel for safety reasons.

Is this one for you?The shared format works for groups and solo travelers who don't mind sailing with up to 29 others, but the low guest count means you get deck space and attention without the feel of a crowded party boat. Bring your own drinks if you want to control what you're paying for and what you're drinking. That's the whole difference here.
