The experience
Smithfield Mountain Bike Park is a technical network of ungroomed trails built into rainforest: rocks and protruding tree roots are part of the ride, not obstacles to avoid. The park has hosted the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup three times and the UCI World Mountain Bike Championships twice, so the terrain you're riding is the same one elite racers use. More than 60km of marked trails span green, blue and black ratings, so your guide will choose the runs that match your skill and what you want from the morning.
You ride e-mountain bikes, which means the climbs don't drain you the way they would on a regular bike. The motor handles the steep sections so you can focus on the technical descents and the line choices that make mountain biking here different from anywhere else. The trails twist through vine-clad jungle, cross clear-flowing streams and run along jagged ridges that open onto views of the Great Barrier Reef. Your guide speaks English or Italian and knows which sections to hit depending on conditions and what you want to see.
The bike shop is in Palm Cove, an easy 20-minute ride to the park entrance. The four-hour session includes the bike, helmet and guide. You'll want to bring water because hydration packs aren't provided. Travelers should have at least moderate fitness. The terrain is technical and the day is full, so this isn't a casual pedal.
