There's a new face in the penguin colony at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, and if you time it right, you'll watch Dunkin — the adorable King Penguin chick — move through the water for the first time in months. The aquarium sits right on Darling Harbour, holding 12,000 animals across tanks that move from shallow rays and stingrays to the deeper shark zones, and the whole thing is built so you can walk through without backtracking. It's not a small place, but it's also not overwhelming — you move at your own pace, and there's no guide talking at you.

If you're visiting between early July and late August, the Animal Crossing: New Horizons experience runs through the aquarium, which means you collect stamps of characters as you walk the exhibits. It sounds gimmicky until you realize it gives kids (and honestly, adults) a reason to actually stop and look at each tank instead of just walking past. Isabelle appears for photo ops on weekdays at 10:30am, 11:30am, 1pm and 2pm, and weekends add a 3pm slot — though the aquarium warns times shift, so check their website the morning you go. The digital photo pass is included, so any shots you take at the themed stations are yours to download later; prints cost extra if you want them.

The whole visit is self-guided, which means you're not locked into a group or a schedule. Wheelchairs and prams are available if you need them, and every area is accessible. Public transport gets you there easily, and the harbour location means you can grab food nearby without leaving the precinct. Most people spend two to three hours inside, though you can move faster or slower depending on how long you linger at the shark tank or the penguin zone.
