The experience

The dive starts at your hotel. A guide picks you up, takes you to the dive center where you and the instructor set up your equipment, then heads to the boat for the ride out to Wave Break Island. The site itself sits in calm, sheltered water: the kind of place where you can focus on the moment rather than fighting current or surge. Once underwater, you get to hand-feed the fish, which is the part most people talk about afterward.

Introductory divers and certified divers go down together with an experienced PADI instructor, so if you've never done this before, you're not separated into a beginner group watching a demonstration. You're in the water doing it. The whole outing takes about four hours from pickup to drop-off, which means you're back at your hotel with time left in the day. If diving doesn't appeal once you're there, snorkeling gear is on hand as an alternative.
