The experience
The day starts in Bundeena, a small town inside the park where an old wharf overlooks Horderns Beach, then moves onto the Royal National Park Coastal Track. You walk through coastal heathland past named formations (The Cobblers, Balconies, the Waterrun) stopping to look at native plants like banksia, grass trees and gymea lilies. Your guide discusses the park's wildlife and geology as you head toward Wedding Cake Rock, where white sandstone cliffs meet the Pacific. The walk is paced to your fitness level, and you can choose to push further to Marley Beach, a rarely crowded stretch backed by sand dunes and a natural lagoon.
Wattamolla is the day's centerpiece: a waterfall drops roughly 10 metres from Cootes Creek into a large lagoon that flows to the beach. In warmer months both the lagoon and the ocean are swimmable, so you pick freshwater or salt water. A short 15-minute walk is available if you prefer less exertion. From there the route takes you to Bald Hill for views across the Illawarra Escarpment and down to Stanwell Park Beach, with chances to watch paragliders and hang gliders launch from the ridge. Sea Cliff Bridge, a cantilevered span high above the ocean, is another stop.
The itinerary can include Symbio Wildlife Park, where koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, emus and Tasmanian devils live alongside wedge-tailed eagles, Gouldian Finches and non-native animals like red pandas and cheetahs. At day's end you have the option to stop at the Imperial at Clifton Hotel, a restored historic building with original fireplaces and timber details, for a cold drink or coffee. Transport is door-to-door in a new SUV, and lunch (sourdough sandwiches made to your order, two salads and a pastry) travels with you. Drinks are sparkling water, juice or cold water, plus muesli bars, apples and fruit throughout the day. Your guide photographs the day with a mirrorless camera and sends the images by email the next day, or uses your phone if you prefer.
Is this one for you?The walk to Wedding Cake Rock and along the coastal track is moderate and paced to your group, but involves several hours on uneven terrain.
