The experience
You arrive at Onkaparinga River National Park ready to get on rock for the first time, or to sharpen skills you haven't used in years. The gorge here cuts through native bushland with permanent pools below and cliff faces up to 30 metres high. Your guide (accredited and experienced) meets you and walks through the gear: harness, shoes, helmet, rope. The setup takes time, but it's deliberate. You're learning how each piece works before you leave the ground.
The climbs are set for different levels. You don't start on the hardest route. You start on one that matches what your body can do today. Your guide stays close, calling out handholds, watching your footwork, letting you figure out the puzzle of the rock. Some people move fast. Others take their time. Both are fine. The point is learning to read the wall and trust the equipment. When you reach the top, you don't hike down. You abseil: controlled descent on rope, with your guide managing the belay below. That's the part people remember.
The four hours move quickly because there's no standing around. You're either climbing, learning, or resting between attempts. Native birds move through the trees overhead. If you're lucky, you'll spot koalas or kangaroos in the distance. Bring sunscreen, a hat, water, and snacks. The park has no café. Transport from Adelaide CBD is not included, so arrange that separately.
Is this one for you? This class works best for small groups or individuals who want hands-on instruction and aren't looking for a guided tour of the park. The four-hour format gives you time to climb multiple routes and learn the technique properly, rather than rushing through a single ascent.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (12 to 17 years). Children under 12 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What fitness level do I need for rock climbing in Onkaparinga River National Park?
You need at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The guides set climbs for different abilities, so beginners and experienced climbers both find routes that challenge them without overwhelming them. Children from age 12 are welcome if they meet the fitness requirement.
What's the difference between rock climbing and abseiling on this class?
Rock climbing is ascending the cliff face using handholds and footwork, with the guide managing the rope from below. Abseiling is the controlled descent back down on the same rope, with you managing your speed and the guide belaying. You do both in the same session.
Are there weight or height limits for this class?
Yes. Participants must be at least 120 centimetres tall and weigh between 25 and 120 kilograms. The limits exist because the equipment is sized and rated for that range.
What happens if I've never climbed before?
The guides teach from the ground up. They show you how to use the equipment, how to move on the rock, and how to trust the rope. A variety of climbs are set up, so your first routes are designed for learning, not for pushing hard.
Do I need to bring my own climbing shoes or gear?
No. All climbing gear is provided: harnesses, shoes, helmet, and rope. Bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a full water bottle, small snacks, and a camera if you want photos.
