The experience
The tour starts with a drive from your Melbourne hotel through countryside and the historic town of Ballarat to Sovereign Hill. There you walk heritage streets lined with recreated 1850s buildings, watch traditional demonstrations, and try gold panning to search for real gold. The centerpiece of what made this region boom in Australia's Gold Rush era. After exploring the town, you return to the vehicle for the drive to the Great Ocean Road.
The coastal portion takes you to four major stops. Gibson Steps descends a historic cliffside path to a beach facing towering limestone cliffs. The Twelve Apostles, the most famous of these formations, rise dramatically from the Southern Ocean and dominate the views along this stretch. Loch Ard Gorge, surrounded by golden sand and turquoise water, carries the story of a 19th-century shipwreck. Between stops, the drive itself is the landscape: rugged cliffs, ocean views, and regional towns. The tour wraps with a return drive to your Melbourne hotel.
Your group stays private throughout (whether you're one to three people, four to seven, or eight to eleven), and travels in an air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water and onboard WiFi. A live English-speaking guide leads the day. Entry to both Sovereign Hill and the Great Ocean Road sites is included. You'll need to arrange lunch separately.

Is this one for you?Book the private option that matches your group size if you want to set your own pace at each stop without coordinating with other travelers. The full-day schedule, roughly 11 to 12 hours, fits both Sovereign Hill's Gold Rush experience and the Great Ocean Road's four major coastal landmarks into one departure, so you see both in a single day rather than splitting them across separate trips.

What exactly is Sovereign Hill and what do you do there?
Sovereign Hill is an open-air museum in Ballarat recreating an 1850s Gold Rush town. You walk through heritage streets with historic buildings and shops, watch traditional demonstrations of the era, and try your hand at gold panning to search for real gold in the creek.
How much time do you spend at Sovereign Hill versus the Great Ocean Road?
