The lift takes 38 seconds. That's how fast you rise through the Eureka Tower to reach the Skydeck on the 88th floor — the highest viewing platform in the Southern Hemisphere, 300 metres up. The day begins west of Melbourne in Ballarat, where the air-conditioned coach collects you from the city and carries you toward the 1850s, and by the time that lift doors open, you've already walked through a botanical garden, panned for gold in an open-air museum, and stood where miners once rebelled.
