The experience
You meet the crew at Barossa Helicopters on the family property in Hoffnungsthal Valley, one of the first German settlement sites in the Barossa, for a safety briefing and passenger manifest. Then you walk out to the Robinson R44 helicopter: a four-seat aircraft where every passenger gets a panoramic view. The pilot talks you through the route as you lift off over the valley floor, and because this is a private flight, only your group travels on board.
The route depends on which flight length you choose. All three options pass over Jacob's Creek at Rowland Flat, where massive tanks hold up to 1.4 million litres of wine among the vines, and circle the southern Barossa township near the Goldfields. The 15-minute flight adds the South Para Reservoir and Williamstown. The 20-minute flight reaches Seppeltsfield and Tanunda. You return to the landing pad at the same spot where you started, and the crew photographs you beside the helicopter on your own phone or camera before you leave.
Barossa Helicopters has flown the valley since the mid-1980s. The cabin can be warm in summer and cool in winter, so dress for the season. Flights are subject to weather and may be rescheduled if conditions are unsafe. Children must be at least 100 cm tall to fly. Maximum individual weight is 130 kg, and the combined weight for three passengers cannot exceed 270 kg. Bags, loose clothing, selfie sticks and smoking are not allowed on board.
