The experience

The tour starts an hour north of Perth at Yanchep National Park, where you walk through native bushland to spot kangaroos and koalas in their natural habitat. From there the route heads to Nambung National Park, where you step into the Pinnacles Desert: a landscape of thousands of ancient limestone pillars jutting from golden sand. This is one of Western Australia's most photographed sites, and the scale of it hits differently when you're walking among the formations rather than seeing it in a photo.

After the Pinnacles, the tour moves to Cervantes, a small coastal town on the Indian Ocean. Lunch is included (your choice of Fish & Chips, Steak Sandwich or Vegan Cheeseburger), and you eat by the sea. The town is known for its lobster industry. If you want to upgrade to a fresh lobster, that's available for an extra charge, and an optional guided tour of the processing factory runs in English. The final stop is Lancelin, where massive sand dunes roll across the landscape. Sandboarding down them is optional, so whether you're after the adrenaline or just want to walk and photograph, the dunes work either way.

The whole day runs 10 hours from pickup to drop-off. You travel in an air-conditioned bus or 4WD with a maximum of 12 people per vehicle, and your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or German depending on which departure you book. Hotel pickup is included from Perth City, Fremantle, Cottesloe or Scarborough. The tour operates year-round, though during wildflower season the region fills with color beyond the Pinnacles themselves.
