The experience
Nine hours takes you from a daytime bush walk through Dryandra Woodlands (a biodiversity hotspot holding more than 850 plant species, over 100 birds and 24 mammals) to a nocturnal wildlife sanctuary and then to stargazing. The woodlands shelter endangered numbats and bilbies alongside echidnas, brush-tailed wallabies, woylies and other native animals you'll look for on foot before dinner. Your guide cooks beef and chicken on the barbeque with fresh salads, cheese, biscuits and dip. Wine and hot drinks are available.
After eating in the forest, a scenic drive through the trees keeps kangaroos in view as they move through the dappled light. Then comes Barna Mia, a sanctuary for endangered mammals where a guide explains the conservation work before leading you on a night walk. You sit and wait for the animals to emerge from the darkness to feed. The moment the tour is built around. The guide talks through what you're seeing as the creatures appear.
The final stop is a dark-sky site just outside the woodlands, where the Dryandra region's some of the darkest skies in Australia let you see the Milky Way and shooting stars. Your guide points out what's visible in the night sky and you have time to photograph it. Pickup is included. Public transport options exist nearby if you prefer to meet the group at the woodlands.
