The experience
The Mulgrave River cruise sets the pace before you reach the reef. The boat leaves Deeral Jetty and winds through mangrove-lined banks where you can spot crocodiles in their natural habitat, a 30-minute passage that takes you from the river mouth about ten kilometres out to Normanby Island. Once you arrive, the reef access is immediate: snorkel straight off the beach with provided equipment, or choose a guided snorkelling tour with an experienced guide, or opt for a semi-submarine reef tour that lets you watch the coral gardens and marine life without getting wet. The reef here holds 200 coral species across Normanby and Mabel islands, part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park's total of 600 species.
Between water time, you control the pace. Free use of kayaks and stand-up paddleboards means you can paddle out on your own or stay on the beach. The islands are home to endangered green and hawksbill turtles, spectacled flying-foxes, and a rare sand star species (Baclogypsina sphirulata) typically found only in Okinawa but also tucked into a secluded spot on Normanby. Afternoon snacks and fresh water are provided throughout the day. If you want lunch, a packed picnic box with vegetarian and vegan options can be pre-ordered at checkout. Lycra suits are provided during stinger season and required for all guests entering the water.
The tour departs around 10:15 am and returns by 2:30 pm. If you book the Cairns pickup option, return transfers from three selected locations are included, subject to availability. If transfers are fully booked, you'll need to self-drive to Deeral Jetty. The self-drive option lets you set your own timing to the jetty. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller, though there are no paved walkways on the island and prams must be carried or pushed in the sand. All guests complete a snorkelling safety acknowledgement before entering the water.
