The experience
You walk into rainforest that has existed continuously for thousands of years, on trails only the guides use: no boardwalks, no railings, no separation from the forest itself. The preserve sits two kilometres from the Coral Sea on the slopes of a mountain, surrounded by Daintree National Park but private enough that you move through the canopy without the crowds. A spotlight and thermal imaging scope let you spot animals that are invisible in daylight: the guide carries the thermal camera and points out what the heat signature reveals, while you use the spotlight to track movement through the vines and ancient medicinal plants.
The guide is a biological scientist trained in the Wet Tropics and local to the area for twenty years. The tour mixes accurate scientific information with storytelling about how each plant and animal fits into the ecosystem: kangaroos that live in trees, a bird larger than a human, species that have existed since the beginning of life on land. Nothing here is considered deadly to humans, but everything has a role in the world's oldest continuously existing forest. Two hours is the length of the walk. The pace is moderate, and you need a reasonable level of fitness for the terrain.

Is this one for you?Two hours is long enough to move deep into the forest and find nocturnal wildlife, but short enough to fit into an afternoon or evening without dominating the rest of your day in the region. Groups stay under eight people, so the walk feels intimate rather than crowded, and the private trails mean you move away from the main park boardwalks where larger tour groups congregate.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What animals will I actually see on a night walk in Cape Tribulation?
The nocturnal wildlife depends on the season and the night, but the guides use thermal imaging and spotlights to locate native species that are active after dark. Kangaroos, birds, reptiles and insects are common. The thermal scope reveals heat signatures that make animals visible even when they are camouflaged in the canopy or undergrowth.
How far is Cape Tribulation from Cairns, and do I need to arrange my own transport?
Cape Tribulation is roughly 140 kilometres north of Cairns, about a two-hour drive. The tour operator does not include transport from Cairns. You will need to arrange your own vehicle or book a separate transfer to meet the guide at the trailhead.
Is the night walk suitable for children, and what is the age requirement?
The standard night walk has a minimum age of ten years and requires a moderate level of physical fitness. A family-friendly option is available for children under ten, with no age limit, so younger children can join if you choose that variant at checkout.
What makes these trails different from the boardwalks at Daintree National Park?
The guides use private trails on their nature preserve that are not artificial boardwalks or marked paths open to the public. The trails run through the same old-growth rainforest but feel like moving through natural bush, which gives a more immersive sense of the forest and better access to nocturnal wildlife.
Do I need to bring my own torch or thermal imaging equipment?
No. Spotlights are provided, and the guide carries the thermal imaging scope and UV light used during the walk. You do not need to bring your own equipment.
