The experience
Sixty minutes takes you through the streets of one of New South Wales' most historically distinctive towns, stopping at six buildings that anchor Mudgey's past. You'll see a 1860s church with stunning architecture and stories to match; one of Mudgey's most iconic buildings, which carries a controversial past; a 19th-century park with an almost unbelievable history; a grand old pub filled with amazing stories; Mudgey's tallest and most iconic building, which has rather a surprising history; and a massive Art Deco theatre that locals cherish. The guide does not rush through these stops: each one opens up a different layer of what shaped the town.
The guides are two young locals whose families have lived in Mudgey since the 1850s, so they carry the stories as inheritance rather than script. You'll hear about the Wiradjuri people and the region's Indigenous heritage alongside the dramatic and sometimes downright bizarre history of European settlement. The tour leans into the scandals and conflicts that most heritage walks leave out: religious feuds, secret tunnels, ammunition factories. Mudgey's second-oldest inland European settlement west of the Blue Mountains reads very differently once you know what actually happened behind those charming facades.
The whole walk is wheelchair accessible, and all areas and surfaces are paved. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller. Service animals are welcome. The pace suits all physical fitness levels, so the walk is built for whoever wants to show up and listen.
