The Experience

“You can actually stand on the grass,” our guide said, grinning as we shuffled through a doorway at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. I’d seen this place on TV a hundred times but never expected to feel how springy the turf is under your shoes. We looped by Rod Laver Arena and AAMI Park too—so many venues packed into one part of Melbourne. The weather kept flipping between sun and clouds (classic Melbourne), but it almost fit the mood—like you never quite know what you’ll get next in this city.

Someone asked if we’d see any teams training; sometimes you do if you’re lucky. I left feeling like I finally understood why sport feels so big here. I still think about standing on that MCG grass—it sticks with you more than you’d expect.
