The experience

The first thing I noticed was the soft clink of paintbrushes against ceramic. It’s quieter than you’d think, almost meditative. We’d barely settled into our seats at the Melbourne studio when someone passed around a tray of Turkish delights, dusted with sugar so fine it stuck to my fingers. Our instructor (I think her name was Yasmin?) had this easy way about her, showing us how to hold the brush just right for those tiny blue tulips. I tried to copy her wrist flick but mostly ended up giggling at my own wobbly lines.

I brought a bottle of local Pinot (they said BYO wine, which honestly makes everything better), and there was apple tea steaming in little glasses if you wanted something sweet instead. The room felt warm even though it was chilly outside: paint smudges on aprons, the smell of glaze, people laughing when they messed up a pattern. At one point Yasmin told us about her grandmother back in Istanbul who used to paint plates like these. She made it sound so simple but I could tell there was real pride behind her stories.

By the end, I’d painted a bowl that looked nothing like what I’d pictured but somehow felt exactly like me: awkward brushstrokes and all. There’s something about seeing everyone else’s creations lined up on the table that makes you realize nobody really cares if you’re “good” at art here. We left with sticky fingers, our own painted ceramics wrapped up carefully, and this odd sense of calm that lingered long after we stepped out into the Melbourne night air.
