The experience

The lesson starts with a warm-up on the beach, then moves into the water where your instructor covers paddling technique and how to pop up onto the board. Once you're ready, you'll paddle out and work on catching waves. The whole progression happens in one session, not spread across multiple lessons. The instructors are licensed to run group lessons in both Byron Bay and the Ballina–Lennox Head area, so they'll take you to whichever beach has the best conditions that day.

Transfers run from the check-in centre right in town, so you don't arrange your own way to the beach. You get a soft beginner board, a warm wetsuit or UV rashguard, and sunscreen. The school has been running lessons for over 30 years and is one of only a few licensed to operate group sessions across both Byron Bay and the neighboring beaches.
