The experience

The tour leaves Broome heading south to Windjana Gorge, a 3.5 km gorge cut through the Napier Range by the Lennard River and significant to local Aboriginal people. From there the route follows the Gibb River Road north through a series of gorges: Bell Gorge with its cascading falls and pools, Manning Gorge with its falls and river banks, and smaller sites like Adcock Gorge and Galvans Gorge. Each stop involves a hike and a swim. The road itself is 4WD terrain, slow and steady, and the drive days vary from relaxed to substantial depending on the destination.

The Mitchell Plateau day is built around the complimentary helicopter flight. You depart camp mid-morning, fly over the Mitchell Falls and the plateau, then explore the top of the falls on foot and hike 3.5 km back to the carpark, stopping at Aboriginal rock art sites along the way. From there the tour heads east to El Questro Wilderness Park for three nights, where you swim in the thermal pools at Zebedee Springs, hike into Emma Gorge, and have the option to take a Chamberlain Gorge cruise (booked at checkout). The second half of the tour moves to Kununurra for two nights, including a three-quarter day boat cruise along 55 km of the Ord River between Kununurra and Lake Argyle, then continues to Purnululu National Park (the Bungle Bungles), a World Heritage site known for its orange and grey beehive-shaped domes. You hike into Echidna Chasm, Cathedral Gorge and Piccaninny Creek Lookout. The final two days take you to Fitzroy Crossing and then back to Broome, ending with a boat tour down the Fitzroy River through Geikie Gorge.

All camping equipment is provided (tent, mattress, sleeping bag and pillow), and meals are prepared fresh each day: breakfast, lunch and dinner plus snacks and fresh fruit. An experienced driver-guide leads the group throughout. Hotel pickup and drop-off in Broome are included, as are all national park fees, bottled water and hot drinks. Alcoholic drinks are available to purchase.

If you prefer hotels or a shorter trip, look at the 13-day or 17-day options, or a different format.
