The Experience

The day starts at 7:30am from Darwin, heading south down the Stuart Highway and turning onto the Arnhem Highway toward Kakadu. The first stop is Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, about 30 minutes into the drive—a wetland reserve where you'll spot birds and other wildlife before the park itself. From there, you have a choice: take the optional one-hour jumping crocodile cruise on the Adelaide River, or walk through the bird wetlands with your guide. Either way, there's a refreshments stop where you can buy lunch; the driver will keep it cool in an eski until midday.

Once inside Kakadu, you'll stop for a photo at the park welcome sign, then head to Jabiru, the small town at the heart of the park. The Bowali Visitor Centre is where lunch happens—at your own cost—and where you'll see local Aboriginal artwork. The real draw comes next: Cahills Crossing, where a viewing platform lets you safely watch saltwater crocodiles in their natural habitat. Then it's on to Ubirr, home to rock art thousands of years old. You'll walk the site and take in the views across the park before the return drive to Darwin, arriving around 7:30pm.

The tour runs in all weather, so bring hiking shoes and dress for the conditions. You'll travel in an air-conditioned mini-coach with an experienced outback driver-guide who provides commentary throughout the day. The pace is moderate; the operator recommends at least a moderate fitness level and notes the tour is not suitable for children under 6 or for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
