itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Fraser Island and whale experience

  • Snorkel at remote locations
  • Kayak along the west coast
  • Hike and walk on K'gari
  • Tube in designated areas
  • Watch humpback whales closely
  • Swim with whales if possible

“Did you see that?” someone shouted from the deck, and honestly, I almost dropped my coffee right there. We’d just left Hervey Bay behind—still rubbing sleep from our eyes—and suddenly there was this humpback whale, so close you could see the barnacles on its back. Our guide, Mel (who grew up around here), grinned like she’d seen it a thousand times but still got a kick out of it. The salt air was sharp and fresh, and I swear the sky felt bigger than usual out here.

The west coast of K'gari isn’t what I pictured—less crowds, more wild feeling. We hiked through sand that squeaked underfoot (never realized sand could squeak), then kayaked along these glassy shallows where tiny crabs scuttled sideways. At one point, Mel pointed out a pandanus tree and tried to get us to pronounce it in Butchulla language—Li laughed when I tried to say it; probably butchered it. Lunch tasted like sunscreen and sea breeze because we ate right on the beach, toes buried in cool sand. There was talk about maybe swimming with whales if conditions were right—my heart did this weird excited flutter at just the idea.

Snorkeling near K'gari is something else—the water’s colder than you’d think for Queensland, but clear enough to spot little fish darting around your ankles. The whales kept surfacing nearby; sometimes you’d hear them before you saw them—a sudden whoosh of breath that made everyone freeze for a second. Honestly? I still think about that sound at night sometimes. Not everything went perfectly (I lost my snorkel for five minutes), but nobody cared much. It felt like being let in on a secret part of Fraser Island most people never see.
