The experience
The guide picks you up from your Hobart accommodation or cruise ship terminal at a time you choose, then the day unfolds around what you came to see. If you're a wildlife enthusiast, that means time at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary with Tasmanian devils, wombats and native species. If you chase food and wine, the Coal River Valley distilleries and boutique wineries open for exclusive tastings. Photographers head to kunanyi/Mt Wellington for the sweep of Hobart and the Derwent Valley, or to the Tasman Peninsula's dramatic sea cliffs. History buffs find the convict-era township with Australia's oldest bridge, the old gaol and antique shops. The Huon Valley south of Hobart delivers apple orchards and artisan producers in a river landscape. Ben Andrews and his team have the local network that gets you past the guidebook stops.
Optional add-on experiences (pottery masterclass, glass blowing, gin-making workshop, birdwatching in reserves, bushwalks tailored to your fitness level) are available at additional cost and arranged on the day. A boat cruise on the Derwent or Huon River, or an exclusive behind-the-scenes distillery visit, fit inside the eight hours if that's where your interests lie. For those with more time, Maria Island or Freycinet National Park can be arranged as an extended itinerary. Contact the operator to design it. Drop-off happens back at your Hobart accommodation or wherever you want to spend the evening.
Water is included for the full day. Lunch, food tastings and attraction entry fees are separate. The tour operates year-round, though a 10% peak season surcharge applies from November to March. Moderate physical fitness is recommended, especially if bushwalking is part of your day. This is a private tour: only your group participates, and the guide adjusts the pace and the stops to match what you want to do.
