Ten hours on the reef with snorkel or dive gear, meals and a guide who knows the site

A full-day snorkel or certified dive trip from Townsville to John Brewer Reef in the Great Barrier Reef, featuring the Museum of Underwater Art: a submerged structure by artist Jason deCaires Taylor with coral gardens and life-like sculptures. The day includes in-water instruction, reef ecology talks, snorkel or dive gear, light lunch, morning and afternoon tea, and transport aboard a dedicated vessel. Certified divers must present proof. Introductory divers receive instruction and fill out a medical form on the day. Children can snorkel from age 6. Scuba diving starts at age 12.

The experience

Ten hours from departure to return gives you a full immersion in the reef without the rush. You meet the crew at the Townsville marina, check in, and get fitted with snorkel gear or dive equipment depending on your option: mask, snorkel, fins and a full-length suit for snorkelers, or full scuba kit for certified divers. The vessel carries you out to John Brewer Reef, where you can relax in shaded areas or on deck as the crew briefs you on what to expect below.

The Museum of Underwater Art is the draw: a 72-meter submerged structure designed by world-class artist Jason deCaires Taylor, filled with trees, sculptures and coral gardens that blend art with marine science. The reef around it ranges from 1 to 20 meters deep, so snorkelers and divers of different levels work the same site. Schools of bait fish, colorful reef fish, turtles, stingrays and reef sharks are common sightings. Between water sessions, guides share insights into reef ecology and the site's connection to indigenous culture and marine heritage. Novice snorkelers get floating devices (pool noodles, life rings, vests) to build confidence in the water.

Certified divers present their certification card on arrival. If you've logged fewer than 10 dives, a guide leads your dive and you complete a basic medical form beforehand. Introductory divers receive full instruction before entering the water. The day wraps with light lunch, morning and afternoon tea, iced water, tea and coffee provided on board. You'll want to bring a towel, hat, sunscreen and camera. Swimwear goes without saying.
