A 10-hour day trip from Townsville or Magnetic Island to the Central Section of the Great Barrier Reef, where you snorkel or dive with a professional crew and an English-speaking guide. You choose snorkeling with full equipment, an introductory dive with instruction, or certified dives at depths suited to your experience. Reef ecology talks, lunch, and floating devices for beginners are included; introductory divers complete a medical form before entering the water, and certified divers bring proof of certification.
The Experience
The vessel departs Townsville or Magnetic Island and heads to one of three preferred reef sites — John Brewer, Lodestone, or Keeper Reef — chosen for their coral cover, fish life and protection. Each site holds depths from 1 meter to 20 meters, so snorkellers stay in shallower water while divers work deeper. The crew selects the day's exact location based on conditions, which means the same reef visited twice never feels the same.
Snorkel equipment (mask, snorkel, fins and full-length suit) is provided, along with floating devices if you want them — pool noodles, life rings and vests with air are there for anyone new to the reef. If you want to try scuba, an introductory dive pairs you with an experienced instructor who walks you through the basics in the water; certified divers bring their own proof of certification and can do two dives at depths they choose. Reef ecology talks run throughout the day, so you understand what you're seeing — the schools of trevally and bait fish, the Parrotfish and Maori wrasse, the Clownfish and Angel fish, the turtles and stingrays, and the occasional White tip or Black tip reef shark.
Lunch is included, plus iced water, tea and coffee all day. The crew is wheelchair accessible and welcomes children from age 6 for snorkeling (age 12 for introductory diving). You'll need to bring swimwear, a towel, hat, sunscreen and a camera, and advise your height, weight and shoe size at booking so the gear fits properly.
