The experience
The World in Wax galleries let you move at your own pace through rooms of life-size historical figures: presidents and queens, statesmen, musicians, explorers, religious leaders and the infamous. Each figure emerges from a specific moment in history, positioned as if they could speak. You stand before them without a crowd between you and the display, and the skip-the-line entry means you walk past the queue at the door.
The Chamber of Horrors is the guided portion. A live guide leads a half-hour tour through over 40 instruments of punishment collected from different parts of the world: the rack, the guillotine, the tongue tearer, devices devised by the Spanish Inquisition, and tools of execution from centuries when the scaffold stood in the market square and the executioner held a recognized trade. The guide provides historical background for each instrument and raises questions about punishment and torture in the modern world, moving beyond simple display into the context that shaped these tools.
The whole experience runs between one and one and a half hours. Wheelchair access covers all areas and surfaces; service animals are welcome; infants and small children can use a pram or stroller. Public transportation stops nearby, and the venue itself is accessible by wheelchair-accessible transport options.
