The Experience

The coach pulls up to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary just after 9:30am, and you step out into the kind of Australian heat that hits different when you're not ready for it. The entrance gates open onto a sprawl of native bush and enclosures where red kangaroos graze a few meters from the path, and somewhere in the trees above, lorikeets are loud enough that you have to raise your voice. You've got the morning and early afternoon to move through at your own pace: hand-feed the rainbow lorikeets if you want (they land on your arm and it's genuinely startling the first time), watch the koalas in the eucalyptus, get close to wombats and wallabies. Lunch is on your own, so you can grab something at the sanctuary café or bring your own. It's not rushed, which matters when you're with kids or just want to sit and watch without a schedule.

Around 1pm the coach collects you again and heads north toward Byron Bay. The drive takes about an hour through Queensland coastal towns—nothing fancy, just the real stretch of road between two places. When you arrive at Cape Byron Lighthouse, you've got roughly an hour to walk the headland. The lighthouse itself sits on a rocky point where the Pacific swings in hard, and the view is the kind that makes you understand why people live on this coast. The path is easy, the light is clean, and if you're lucky the wind isn't trying to knock you sideways. Your guide stays with the group but gives space to wander, and the hour goes fast—some people circle the lighthouse twice, others just stand at the railing.
