You drive K'gari's beaches and sand tracks yourself, not just ride along.

Eligible drivers aged 21+ with a valid license and two years' experience can take the wheel on the island's famous beaches and sand tracks. The small group—maximum 18 guests—stays in shared beach house accommodation with meals, return ferry transfer and Hervey Bay pickup included.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Fraser Island's natural wonders

  • Visit Lake McKenzie
  • Swim at Champagne Pools
  • Float down Eli Creek
  • Walk in Central Station Rainforest
  • See Maheno Shipwreck
  • Explore Lake Wabby
  • Relax at rainforest lake

The Experience

You arrive in Hervey Bay and get picked up from a select hostel or arrange your own transport to the departure point. The tour runs three days, which means you're not rushing through highlights or spending the whole time as a passenger watching someone else navigate K'gari's sand tracks. If you're 21 or older with an open license and at least two years of driving experience, you'll get a safety briefing the morning you leave and the chance to drive a 4WD on the beach and inland tracks—no off-road experience needed. The guide handles navigation and timing; you handle the wheel when it's your turn.

The three days move through Lake McKenzie, a freshwater lake with white silica sand so fine it filters the water clear enough that fish can't survive in it. You'll float down Eli Creek as the current carries you, stop at the Maheno Shipwreck—a 110-year-old former luxury liner rusted onto the 75-mile beach—and walk through Central Station Rainforest where the largest fern fronds in the world tower overhead. Lake Wabby sits in a rainforest hollow on the other side of the island, ringed by a circuit track and a viewing platform where freshwater turtles sometimes appear. Champagne Pools, natural rock formations that shield the beach from ocean swell, offer a unique bathing spot reached by a short boardwalk.

You stay in shared rooms at a private beach house, and meals are provided: two lunches, one dinner and one breakfast across the three days, plus snacks. Dietary requirements are catered for (gluten-free, vegan and lactose-free meals cost an extra $5 per day). The group maxes out at 18 people, which means more room to move around the vehicle and more time at each stop than a standard island tour. Return ferry transfer to Hervey Bay is included, and you can arrange free parking at the departure point or pay for secure parking if you prefer.

What’s included

  • Return ferry transfer from K'gari to Hervey Bay.
  • free pickup from select Hervey Bay hostels.
  • private beach house accommodation in shared rooms.
  • two lunches, one dinner, one breakfast and snacks across the three days.
  • bag storage for larger luggage.
  • free street parking at the departure point (secure parking available for an additional fee).

Is this one for you?Three days is long enough to drive multiple sections of the island yourself and spend real time at each stop without feeling rushed, but short enough to fit into a longer Queensland trip. If you're 21+ with a valid license and want hands-on control of the 4WD instead of sitting as a passenger, this tour gives you that; if you prefer to be driven the whole way, a standard island tour may suit you better.

Top questions

Can I drive the 4WD if I've never done off-road driving before?

Yes. The tour includes a driver safety briefing the morning of departure, and no off-road experience is necessary. You do need to be at least 21 years old, hold an open license and have at least two years of driving experience.

What is Lake McKenzie like compared to the ocean beaches?

Lake McKenzie is a freshwater lake with white silica sand that filters the water so clear it supports almost no fish life. The sand is fine and the water is calm—a stark contrast to the open ocean beaches and a popular spot for swimming and floating.

What does the Maheno Shipwreck actually look like?

The Maheno is a rusted hull of a former luxury liner and World War 1 hospital ship from New Zealand, over 110 years old, lying on the 75-mile beach. It's a popular photography spot and one of K'gari's most recognizable landmarks.

What meals are included, and can you cater for dietary needs?

The tour includes two lunches, one dinner and one breakfast across the three days, plus snacks. Dietary requirements are catered for; gluten-free, vegan and lactose-free meals cost an extra $5 per day.

How many people will be on the tour?

The group is capped at 18 guests maximum, which keeps it small enough that you're not crowded on the 4WD or rushed through stops.

Do I need to bring my own luggage, or is there storage?

Pack small luggage only—approximately 30 liters. Bag storage is available for larger travel bags while you're away, so you can leave extra gear behind if needed.
