The experience

Two days on K'gari means you get the main attractions without rushing through them in an afternoon. You'll drive yourself across the 75-mile beach and sandy inland tracks in an automatic 4WD, following an experienced guide who handles navigation and timing. The first morning starts with a safety briefing and sand-driving guidance. After that, you're behind the wheel. Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) comes first: a freshwater lake with white silica sand so fine it filters the water clear enough that fish can't survive in it. Eli Creek is next, where four million litres of fresh water pour into the ocean every hour, and you can float downstream with the current. The Maheno Shipwreck, a 110-year-old former luxury liner and World War I hospital ship, sits rusted on the beach and is one of K'gari's most photographed landmarks.

You'll stay at a private beach house at Eurong with quad-share rooms, linen, flushing toilets and hot showers: comfort without the tent. Meals are included: two lunches, one dinner and one breakfast, plus snacks throughout the day. Central Station rainforest, in the island's heart, is a lunch stop where you can walk among the largest fern fronds in the world. Lake Wabby, one of the deepest lakes on the island, sits between a sandblow and rainforest and is one of the few K'gari lakes where you'll spot fish. The route adjusts for tides and conditions, so the exact stops depend on when you travel.

Ferry transfers from Hervey Bay are included, as are free pickups from select hostels in town. You'll need to pack light (a 30-litre bag or smaller), and bring your driver's license if you want to drive (you must be 21 or over with at least two years' driving experience). If fewer than two vehicles run on your departure, the lead guide is the only person legally allowed to drive, so confirm the arrangement when you book. Alcohol and snacks are welcome. Boxed wine is not.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

Can I actually drive the 4WD myself, or is it just the guide?

Eligible guests drive the automatic 4WD across K'gari's beaches and sandy tracks while the guide leads and navigates. You'll receive a comprehensive safety briefing and sand-driving guidance before you set out, and no 4WD experience is necessary. If you prefer not to drive, you can ride as a passenger instead.

What is Lake McKenzie actually like when you get there?

Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) is a freshwater lake with white silica sand so fine it acts as a natural filter, making the water exceptionally clear. The sand is so pure that fish cannot survive in it, which is why the lake supports very little aquatic life, but it's perfect for swimming and is one of K'gari's most visited natural wonders.

Do I have to camp, or is there real accommodation?

You stay in a private beach house at Eurong with quad-share rooms, linen, flushing toilets and hot showers. It's off-grid but comfortable, so you get the K'gari adventure without a tent.

What meals are included over the two days?

Two lunches, one dinner and one breakfast are included, plus snacks throughout the day. Dietary requirements are catered for. Gluten-free, vegan and lactose-free meals cost an extra $5 per day.

How many people travel together in each 4WD?

Groups stay under eight guests per vehicle, so you're not in a large tour coach. If fewer than two vehicles run on your departure, the lead guide is the only person legally allowed to drive.
