The Experience
The day starts with pickup from your Cairns accommodation and a drive north along the coast to Port Douglas, where the road climbs into mountain views. You'll stop at Rex Lookout and Flagstaff Hill to take in the sweep of Four Mile Beach and the Coral Sea before heading into the rainforest proper. Morning tea—pastries, coffee and tea—happens at Mossman Gorge Centre, then you board a shuttle with your guide for a walk into the dense tropical forest itself. The Mossman River runs clear over granite boulders below, and if the weather holds, you can swim.
Lunch is a sit-down meal at a local restaurant featuring Australian produce—barramundi, steak, chicken, kangaroo or vegetarian options—in a rainforest setting. After eating, you board a guided one-hour wildlife cruise on the Daintree River, where crocodiles and other local animals move through the water. You'll cross the river itself on a cable ferry, then climb to Alexandra Lookout for views over the river delta and out to the Coral Sea. The final stop is Kulki Lookout at Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the reef; from there the drive back to Cairns begins. On the way, there's a stop at Daintree Ice Cream Company if you want to try locally made ice cream with tropical fruit (at your own cost).
The tour runs 12 hours total and travels in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Your guide is a naturalist with local knowledge, and a multilingual audio guide app lets you follow along in your preferred language. You'll cover national park fees, transport, meals and morning tea; the only extras are optional purchases like ice cream or additional drinks.

What's the Daintree Rainforest actually like when you walk through it?
Mossman Gorge sits on the southern edge of Daintree National Park, part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland UNESCO World Heritage site. The guided walk takes you into dense tropical rainforest where the Mossman River runs clear over granite boulders; the forest is likely the oldest tropical rainforest on Earth, and the walk lets you see it close rather than from a distance.
Will I actually see crocodiles on the Daintree River cruise?
The one-hour guided wildlife cruise on the Daintree River is built around spotting crocodiles and other local wildlife. Whether you see them depends on the day and the season, but the cruise is where the operator takes you to look for them.
How does the group size work when I book?
You choose your group size at checkout: 1–2 passengers, 3–4, 5–8, 9–14, or 15–20 traveling together. The vehicle and guide stay private to your group for the full 12 hours, and the price adjusts based on which size you select.
What time does the tour start and finish?
Pickup happens from your Cairns accommodation at the start of the day. The tour runs 12 hours total, so if you're picked up at 7am, you'd return around 7pm; exact times depend on your hotel location and the operator's schedule for your departure date.
Is lunch included, or do I need to pay extra?
Lunch at a local restaurant is included in the tour price, with a choice of barramundi, chicken, steak, kangaroo or vegetarian. Morning tea with pastries, coffee and tea is also included. The only optional expense is ice cream at Daintree Ice Cream Company on the way back, which is at your own cost.
Can I swim in the rainforest, or is that just an option?
At Mossman Gorge, you can swim in the clear waters of the Mossman River if time and weather permit. It's not guaranteed—weather and the day's schedule decide—but the opportunity is built into the walk.
